BASEBALL CLAIMS FIRST DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP SINCE 2013 WITH WINS OVER GANNON

ERIE, Pa. - Twice Sunday, the Clarion University baseball team came up with a late multiple-run inning to sweep a PSAC West doubleheader against Gannon in Erie.

The Golden Eagles used a five-run sixth inning in game on to erase a 3-2 deficit and gain a 7-3 win and then broke a 4-4 tie in game two with two runs in the fifth to win 6-5. It marked Clarion's first PSAC West doubleheader sweep since taking two from Lock Haven May 4, 2013, in Clarion and the Golden Eagles first PSAC West doubleheader outside of Clarion Borough since winning two at IUP April 14, 2012.

The home team for both games Sunday despite the games being played in Erie, Clarion got a pair of two-hit games from Mike Lockhart and Derek Danver, while Tyler Falk extended his career-best hitting streak to 10 straight games by going 1-for-3 with a run scored in game one and 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in game two.

Trailing by a run going to the sixth in game one, the Golden Eagles tied the game when Danver, who was 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and a run scored, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring Ben Thomas. Jordan Mesoraco, who was 3-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored and two RBIs, then hit a book-rule double to give Clarion the lead, 5-3, before Lockhart, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs followed with another double to add insurance runs.

The sixth-inning outburst made a winner of Tyler Delval, who pitched a strong game. Delval, who improved to 3-4 on the season, went six innings allowing three runs, all earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out two. Kyle Armagost pitched a scoreless seventh walking two and striking out two. Drew Pirritano added a double, wa walk and a run scored.

In game two, Clarion broke the 4-4 tie with two runs in the fifth when Josh Ponsoll hit a sacrifice fly scoring Falk, who had led off with a single and moved to third on a Danver double. Danver then came home on a Lockhart double.

Gannon got a run back in the sixth off Sean White, who got the win, his third of the year, but Armagost shut the door in the seventh striking out two of the three batters he faced to pick up his first collegiate save.

White was solid going six innings and allowing the five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two.

Lockhart was 2-for-2 in the game with two doubles, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Danver was 2-for-3 with the double and the run scored, Joey Lopez was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

The Golden Eagles improve to 7-20 overall and 5-15 in the PSAC West, while Gannon falls to 14-22 and 4-16 in the conference.

Clarion is back in action in a non-conference doubleheader at Bloomsburg Wednesday.
