PAVASKO WINS ON SENIOR NIGHT, BUT WRESTLING FALLS TO LOCK HAVEN

CLARION, Pa. – Michael Pavasko went out a winner on Senior Night and the Clarion wrestling team rallied in the middle of the match, but the Golden Eagles were unable to complete the comeback in falling 24-19 to Lock Haven on Friday. With the loss the Golden Eagles fall to 6-11 overall on the season, 2-4 in Eastern Wrestling League action.

Pavasko earned a hard-fought win on his senior night in Tippin Gymnasium, picking up a critical takedown in the third period to claim a 5-2 victory over Tyler Wood at 174 pounds.  Wood had tied the score at 2-2 with an escape early in the second period, and neither of the two grapplers was able to get the upper hand until the third period.

Pavasko elected to start the third period in neutral position and promptly brought Wood down with a single-leg takedown to take a 4-2 lead.  The senior from Munhall held on for the riding time advantage, quashing any chance of a Wood rally and taking the 5-2 decision.

Brock Zacherl put the Golden Eagles' first points of the night on the scoreboard in the 141-pound match, beating Joe Ghione by fall late in the second period of their match.  Zacherl dropped Ghione with a single-leg takedown to open the first period and let 4-1 after three minutes of action; the lead reached 6-1 before Zacherl brought Ghione down again, this time twisting him to the mat and pinning him at the 4:54 mark to claim the win by fall.

The other Clarion wrestler to claim a victory on the mat was Evan DeLong, who worked over Cody Cordes for a 10-1 major decision.  DeLong led 4-1 after two periods and had already accumulated roughly three minutes of riding time entering the third period.  After scoring points on a technical violation and an escape to go ahead 6-1, DeLong brought Cordes down again and ultimately took the ride time advantage to claim the 10-1 major decision.

Lock Haven led 8-0 after the first two matches but Zacherl's win by fall cut the lead to 8-6.  Pavasko's victory over Wood cut the lead to 17-13 but the Bald Eagles claimed a decision in the 184 match and a major at 197 to take a 24-13 lead, rendering the final match moot.
