EDINBORO, Pa. – Freshman
Zack DeLuca took fifth place in the heavyweight division and senior
Michael Pavasko reached the third-place match at 174 as the Golden Eagles enjoyed a successful showing at the Edinboro Open on Saturday.
Pavasko wrestled his way to the semifinals of the main bracket at 174, getting by each of his first three opponents to reach the final four of the field. He started the day by defeating a familiar foe, beating Clarion teammate
Slade Horner (wrestling unattached) by fall just a minute into their bout. He made quick work of his next opponent as well, working Pittsburgh's Cam Jacobson for a 17-2 score and a win by technical fall.
After Milik Dawkins was forced to withdraw from the next match due to a medical forfeit, Pavasko put on a strong showing against Edinboro's Fritz Hoehn in the semifinal match. The two evenly-matched opponents put on a show, with Hoehn edging out Pavasko 6-5. The senior from Munhall moved on to the third-place match where he lost via fall to Michigan's Myles Amine.
DeLuca also won his first two matches of the day, starting with a 7-2 decision over Rider's Ryan Cloud in the Round of 32. He took a close decision with Bucknell's Chuck Boddy in his second match to move on to the quarterfinals but lost by fall to Hofstra's Mike Hughes to go to the consolation bracket.
DeLuca wrestled his way into a top-five finish by winning each of his last three matches, starting with a win by fall over Lehigh's Christian Collucci. He won his consolation semifinal by scoring a major decision over Buffalo's Ian James, and the Pittsburgh native claimed a 4-0 decision over West Virginia's Austin Myers in the fifth-place match.
Elsewhere,
Travis Jones recorded a 4-2 day at 125 pounds, beating Cleveland State's Andrew Coghill by technical fall in the first round matchup and winning three straight in the consolation bracket to reach the semifinals of that field.
Evan Daley also reached a consolation semifinal, winning three straight before losing to Myers.
