ERIE, Pa. – The Clarion baseball team played a pair of low-scoring affairs on the road on Friday, but were unable to complete comebacks in each as the Golden Eagles fell by 2-1 and 4-3 scores to the Gannon Knights. With the losses, Clarion falls to 6-28 overall and 2-20 in PSAC West play.
The first game between the two teams was a pitchers' duel, with the Knights coming out on top by a 2-1 score.
Tyler Delval (2-4) was extremely strong in the start, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing just two runs; after giving up a pair in the bottom of the first inning he put five consecutive zeroes on the scoreboard against the Knights, striking out seven and walking just one.
The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, with Nate Cardy swatting a two-run double to make it a 2-0 advantage. Clarion struggled to prevail over pitcher Santiago Mendez, mustering just three hits against him in 7.0 innings.
Their breakthrough came in the top of the fourth inning after
Tyler Falk reached base on a two-out error by third baseman Bobby Roach.
Mitch Holmberg followed him with an RBI triple, cutting into Gannon's lead and making it 2-1. Mendez struck out
Austin Mike to end the inning, though, and the Golden Eagles would put just one more batter in scoring position the rest of the game.
Game 2 required extra innings as the two teams were knotted up at 3-3 at the conclusion of seven innings of action. The Golden Eagles came back from a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to draw even with the Knights.
Sean White got the start and was faced with a no-decision after allowing three runs in 6.0 innings.
Doug Conrad (0-6) took the loss despite a strong pitching effort in relief; he allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the loss.
Delval tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly to score
Dillon Wolbert, but the Knights added two more runs in the home half of the inning to take a 3-1 advantage.
Mason McGuire cut into the lead with a solo home run in the fifth inning to make it 3-2, and Wolbert scored on a throwing error by the catcher to tie the score at 3-3.
The teams traded zeroes until the bottom of the ninth inning, when Mark DeVita hit an RBI double to score Jared Wiesen and take the win.
