CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion baseball team won their second game of the day thanks to a wild walk-off moment in extra innings, and the Golden Eagles finished the day with a split against Gannon. Clarion came back from late-game deficits of 8-6 and 10-8 to beat the Knights 11-10 in eight innings in the late game after falling 17-5 in Game 1. With the split, Clarion is now 7-29 on the season, 3-21 in PSAC Central play.
Â
The Golden Eagles trailed by two-run deficits in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings but each time clawed their way back; in the case of the latter, they broke through and scored the game-winning run.Â
Mitch Holmberg hit a leadoff single in the eighth and advanced to third after
Josh Ponsoll ripped a fly ball to center field but was caught in a rundown for the first out of the inning.Â
Seth Mley – who came in as a pinch-runner for
Tyler Delval in the seventh – smoked an RBI double to score Holmberg and draw Clarion closer.
Â
John Finke pinch-hit in the next spot and hit a hard chopper to third base, ultimately reaching first and moving Mley over to third as the ball was mishandled by Bobby Roach.Â
Mike Lockhart laid a drag bunt down the first base line to tie the game at 10-10, scoring Mley and advancing pinch-runner
Zach Mathias to second base.Â
Â
Things continued to unravel for the Knights as Nico DiPaolo dropped an
Austin Mike pop-up to put Mathias on third and extend the inning. With runners on first and third with two outs, DiPaolo attempted to pick off Mike at second base on a feigned steal; the throw from the mound sailed into center field, allowing Mathias to score and give Clarion the 11-10 win.
Â
Sean White (1-4) picked up his first win of the season after coming in to clean up a jam in the top of the eighth inning, taking
Jay Moog off the hook for the loss.Â
Kyle Armagost started and got a no-decision, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing eight runs.
Â
Those late game heroics would have meant nothing without the work done in the bottom of the seventh. The Golden Eagles trailed 8-6 when Delval hit a leadoff single and
Tyler Falk punched a single into right field. Falk was lifted for pinch-runner
Doug Conrad and both runners moved up a base after a single from Mike loaded the bases.Â
Mason McGuire plated Mley on a fielder's choice, beating out a potential double-play to first base, and
Brian Laurito tied the score with a two-out single to center field.
Â
Gannon scored the first three runs of the game but Clarion responded with a four-run second inning as the Knights committed three errors. The Knights made it 5-5 in the fourth inning but Falk responded with a home run put the Golden Eagles back ahead. The Knights ultimately re-took the advantage in the sixth and seventh innings before Clarion finished the comeback.
Â
The first game was much more in favor of the Knights, who scored eight runs in the first two innings and were never seriously threatened by the Golden Eagles. Delval went 3-of-3 with two RBI's and a run in the first game while
Tyler Falk went 3-of-4 with three RBI's.Â
Kane McCall was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs in 1.1 innings of work.
