CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion softball team honored seniors
Kiersten Gromley and
Christina Tressler in the final games of their careers, but the Golden Eagles were unable to eke out a win against Lock Haven, falling by scores of 4-0 and 11-0 in the doubleheader. Clarion finishes the season with an overall record of 4-33 and a conference record of 1-19.
Â
The Golden Eagles' two seniors were honored between games on Saturday, with Tressler finishing off her 121st consecutive start while Gromley concluded her first and only season in the field after coming to Clarion as a pitcher.Â
Â
Lock Haven's pitching stymied the Clarion attack, though, limiting the Golden Eagles to four hits in Game 1 and just two baserunners – one hit and one error – in the second.Â
Kira Smith (1-5) fell in Game 1 after allowing four runs in 7.0 innings pitched, while
Rachel Hoffman (2-13) was responsible for 11 runs in 3.1 innings pitched in the late game.
Â
Both pitchers started Game 1 by mowing down opposing batters, with neither team getting a baserunner until the Bald Eagles got a leadoff single in the third inning. Lock Haven scored four in the top of the fifth inning, starting with an RBI single from Becca Caputo and a two-run home run from Bekah Slattery.Â
Â
Clarion's best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth inning after a one-out double by
Marissa Peterson.Â
Taylor Nonnenberg hit a flare to right field that dropped in for a hit, but Peterson was gunned down at home by the right fielder to end that threat.Â
Cassidy Runyan followed with a single and Tressler was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, but
Paige Baker popped up to first to end the game. The Bald Eagles held on the in the seventh inning to take the win.
Â
The second game was more firmly in hand for the Bald Eagles from the outset, who scored six times in the top of the second inning to build an early advantage. That lead jumped to 11-0 after a five-run fourth inning. Lock Haven erased the first Clarion chance in the bottom of the second inning when they induced a double play from
Autumn Babcock, wiping
Casey Wilcox off the basepaths and getting out of the inning. The only other batter to reach was Peterson, thanks to an error at first base, but Lock Haven controlled the rest of the game for the win.
