Volleyball Sweeps Cheyney for Fourth Straight Win

CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Clarion volleyball team won its fourth straight match and third in a row against PSAC opposition, sweeping Cheyney 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-15) on the road on Friday night.  Clarion (9-6, 3-0 PSAC) will wrap their weekend against West Chester on Saturday.

The match against the Wolves afforded Clarion the opportunity to use a number of different players, and the fresh faces did not disappoint.  Shelby Coughenour had a match-high nine kills and also posted five digs on the evening.  Kaitlyn Glaser and Nicole Lukens also added seven kills apiece.  Leah Venzel and Kaley Pittsley set Clarion to a stellar .418 hitting percentage and combined for 33 assists on the night.

The Golden Eagles opened up the match on a 6-0 run that was capped with three straight kills by Coughenour, and Sarah Boodjeh made it a 9-3 advantage with a kill.  Pittsley and Olivia Olson won the race to 15 with a block of Alaiya Cave and Pittsley ran the advantage to 20-7 with an ace.  Glaser delivered the set-winner in the first, punctuating the 25-9 win with a kill.

Cheyney led the second set by as many as five points, taking a 13-8 lead on a kill by Cave, but Jessica Samuels tied it at 13 with a kill and Julia Holden did it again at 14-all.  Clarion took the lead for good when Lukens bounced a kill to make it 21-20 as the Golden Eagles scored the last five points of the set; they on Kara Coffman's serve thanks to an error by Nishay Carrier.

Clarion ran away with things in the third set, breaking a 6-6 tie with a kill by Glaser and never looking back from that point.  Holden made it 12-6 with a kill and Coffman capped a 10-0 run with a service ace.  Glaser recorded the match-winner at 25-15, taking a set from Pittsley and recording the kill for the victory.
