CALIFORNIA, Pa:
Veronika Noyszewski scored her first goal of the season and the Clarion University women's soccer team played California University to a 1-1 draw Wednesday evening.
Clarion (6-5-4, 5-4-4 PSAC) took the field Wednesday after a lengthy ten day hiatus looking to stay in the thick of PSAC playoff race, coming into today's action just 5 points back of the 8th and final playoff spot with 4 games remaining.
After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles struck first with Noyszewski's tally in the 56
th minute, assisted on a ball played through by senior
Jess Kenny.
Clarion nearly made it 2-0 a short time later when a header by
Dani McNally rang off the post in the 65
th minute. That near miss would loom large as the Vulcans would tie the game 1-1 in the 79
th minute on a goal by Holly Jacobson that was deflected in the box.
The two teams headed to extra time where play got a little chippy as three yellow cards were issued during the first extra frame. California was flagged for three yellow cards on the day compared to just one for Clarion.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Vulcans 14-12 with 5 of those shots going on goal. Each team registered 5 corner kicks apiece on the day.
McKenzie Sheesley and
Aaliyah Odom each posted 4 shots while goalkeepers
Krista Mosi and
Brigid Stermel combined for five saves in net for Clarion.
The Golden Eagles will look to keep their playoff hopes alive this Saturday when they host Millersville University at 5:30pm from Memorial Stadium.
