CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion women's basketball team dominated defensively in an all-around win on Wednesday, defeating Penn State-Greater Allegheny by a 74-21 score at Tippin Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles (5-4, 1-3 PSAC) will be back in action this weekend when they take on Bloomsburg on the road.
Â
More than 200 local elementary school students attended the game as part of the program's Kids' Day, and the children saw a supreme defensive effort in the process. The Golden Eagles held the Nittany Lions to just 9-of-39 shooting from the field, and did not allow them to score more than seven points in any one quarter. Clarion forced 25 turnovers and converted them in to 35 points while turning the ball over just six times themselves.
Â
Everyone that entered the game got on the scoresheet, with
Tracy Wiehe leading the way with 14 points for the Golden Eagles.Â
Amesha Harden-Pullium added 10 points while
Neely Whitehead set a career-high with 10 of her own.Â
Taylor Moltz added eight points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Â
The Nittany Lions actually jumped out to an early lead, going up 6-4 after the second three-pointer of the game from Brandy Taylor. However, that would be the last time they led as Moltz drilled a three-pointer from the corner with 4:54 left in the first to put her team ahead for good. That touched off a 16-1 run for Clarion, as Penn State-Greater Allegheny failed to score another field goal until the 6:43 mark of the second quarter. Harden-Pullium made a three-pointer with 1:10 left in the first quarter to make it 17-6, and Yndiah Bob beat the buzzer at the end of the period to put her team ahead 22-7.
Â
The lead ballooned in the second quarter, reaching 20 points for the first time with 1:10 left.Â
Yasmin Lewis took a pass from Whitehead and converted in the paint to make it 33-13, and less than 30 seconds later
Marina Kelly scored on a putback. Bobo set the halftime score with nine seconds left after Lewis stripped Taylor of the ball and dished it to Whitehead, who kicked it to Bobo for the easy make.
Â
In the third quarter, Harden-Pullium upped the advantage to more than 30 points, making a three-pointer at the 1:31 mark to make it 50-19, and
Jordan Bekelja scored on the next possession to push the lead to 33 points.Â
Shelby Coughenour got in on the action at the end of the quarter, taking a feed from Bekelja and scored with 36 ticks left to give her team a 54-19 lead. Whitehead knocked down a three-pointer with 3:22 left in regulation to make it 65-21, and then another in the final minute of action to push the lead over 50 points.
