Wrestling Flattens Cleveland State 34-6

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Clarion wrestling team closed out its conference duals season with a resounding win on the road, thumping Cleveland State 34-6 in their final Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match of the season.  The Golden Eagles (6-9, 3-3 EWL) will close out their dual match season on Sunday, February 19 when they host West Virginia on Senior Day at Tippin Gymnasium.

The bouts went 8-2 Clarion's way, with the Golden Eagles all but assuring the result against the Vikings fairly early in the afternoon.  Perhaps the biggest win of the day came from Jake Keller – now on a three-match win streak – who defeated one of the nation's top wrestlers at 149 pounds.  Keller beat Nick Montgomery, who entered the match ranked 15th in RPI by the NCAA, by a 10-7 score to put the Golden Eagles ahead 12-3 in the team bout.  Scott Marmoll nearly knocked off an RPI-ranked wrestler of his own, but just narrowly fell 2-1 to Nick Corba at 184 pounds.

The match clincher came courtesy of Dom Rigous, who notched his sixth pinfall victory of the year – and third in the first period – in a win over Devon Pingel at 174 pounds.  In fact, the final three Clarion wins of the day all came via pinfall.  Terrell Fields pinned Collin Kelly to the mat with just 12 seconds remaining in the first period of the 197-pound bout, and Evan Daley flattened Michael Furbee just 33 seconds into the second period of the heavyweight bout to put a heavy exclamation point on the day.

Jake Gromacki opened the day with an 8-1 victory by decision over John Martin at 125 pounds, and Roshaun Cooley notched a dominant win of his own, beating Andrew Coghill 7-1 at 133 pounds.  Freshman Mac Tanner posted the first dual match win of his Golden Eagle career in the 157-pound bout, beating RJ LaBeef 8-5, and Evan DeLong cruised past John Vaughn for a 10-0 major decision.
