MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Clarion softball team just missed out on a split on Saturday, dropping decisions of 4-3 and 4-1 to Millersville in a doubleheader played at Seabar Field. The Golden Eagles (2-20) will be back in action on Wednesday when they face Tiffin, and will play their home opener on Friday against Bloomsburg.
Â
The Golden Eagles' best chance to win came in the first game, when they took a 3-2 lead on a two-run homer by
Rachel Hoffman in the top of the second inning. Hoffman was a combined 3-of-6 at the plate over the course of the doubleheader with two RBI's, and also got a no-decision in the first game. She allowed two runs and struck out five in four innings pitched.Â
Cassidy Runyan had a 3-of-3 performance at the plate in the nightcap, driving in Clarion's lone run in that game.
Â
Runyan also kicked off the scoring in the first game, reaching on a walk and scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning to put Clarion ahead 1-0. The Marauders took a 2-1 advantage in the home half of the inning, but Hoffman put the Golden Eagles back on top just a half-inning later.Â
Laura Sadowski led off the top of the second with a single and Hoffman deposited a homer over the center field wall to make it a 3-2 advantage.
Â
Hoffman kept the Marauders off the scoreboard for the rest of her tenure in the circle, but Millersville added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-3 advantage. Hoffman reached based with one out in the bottom of the seventh but a groundout ended the potential rally.
Â
Neither team scored until the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game, with Millersville enjoying a four-run fourth to set the tone. Runyan ripped a two-out single through the infield to score
Audrey Hummell in the top of the fifth inning, but
Brigid Stermel flied out to end the threat.
