TIFFIN, Ohio – The Clarion softball team earned its second road split in its last three doubleheaders, falling 3-0 at Tiffin in the early game on Wednesday before shutting out the Dragons 2-0 in the nightcap. The Golden Eagles (3-21) is scheduled to play their conference opener on Friday against Bloomsburg.
Â
Aryn Boyer scored the go-ahead run for the Golden Eagles in the nightcap, helping them in an extra innings victory on the road. Placed on second to start the inning, Boyer scored on an error by the third baseman on a hard-hit groundball by
Taylor Nonnenberg. Nonnenberg later came around to score on another error, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage entering the bottom of the eighth inning.Â
Rachel Hoffman retired all three batters she faced in the home half of the inning, inducing flyouts from the final two batters to pick up her third win of the year.Â
Hoffman was dominant in the circle in the late game, throwing eight shutout innings and allowing just three hits and two walks. The only time Tiffin threatened was in the fourth inning Libby Crow reached base and stole both second and third with two outs. Hoffman induced a flyout to end the inning. Crow reached third base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but again Hoffman escaped the jam with a flyout.
Â
In the early game, Tiffin scored the only runs of the game they needed in the second inning, and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. The only Clarion threat came when
Audrey Hummell came in to pinch-run for
Casey Wilcox in the fifth inning, and
Natalie Else singled her over to second base. Boyer flew out and
Cassidy Runyan fanned to end the threat.Â
Macy Rubin suffered the loss.
