Baseball drops pair to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. -  The Clarion University baseball team dropped both games in Saturday double-header action against Mercyhurst by score of 15-2 and 2-1.  The losses move the Golden Eagles to 7-22 (3-13 PSAC) on the season.  The Blue and Gold return to action on on April 18th when they head to DuBois for a clash with the Penn State Dubois Nittany Lions.

The Hurst took game one on the backs of another big first inning, scoring eight runs off of seven hits to open up a gap over the Golden Eagles.  Center-fielder Jimmy Latona smacked a lead-off solo blast to open things up before third-basemen Matthew Schneider smacked a three-run bomb a few at-bats later to lead the rally.

Clarion struck back in the second courtesy of a two-RBI double from Cole Shaffer, however the Hurst's bats would continue to cause trouble all game long for CU.  They would add runs in the third, fifth, and sixth before finally closing out on the 15-2 win.

Game two featured a change in pace from the high-scoring affairs of game one, with both teams locked in a good, old-fashioned pitchers duel.

Starter Kyler Mellott was dynamic, going 5.2 innings with three strikeouts, giving up just three walks and five hits on the afternoon. Hurst starter Vincenzo Lucente also tossed a gem, going a complete seven innings with nine K's and just two hits on the afternoon.

Clarion struck first after Mitch Holmberg drew a leadoff hit-by-pitch tio start the game.  After managing to advance to third on a pair of passed balls, Holmberg scored after shortstop Joey Lopez hit into a fielders choice.

The game would remain scoreless until the fourth when Mercyhurst evened things at one after catcher Sabatino DiNardo smacked another solo homerun, and although the Eagles continued to battle, a walkoff RBI single for Mercyhurst in the bottom of the seventh ended the game.
