CLARION, Pa. – Clarion and Daemen went back and forth in a defensive battle through nearly 104 minutes of shutout ball, but the Wildcats prevailed over the Golden Eagles 1-0 thanks to a goal scored in double overtime. Clarion (3-4-1, 2-3-1 PSAC) will take on IUP on Friday before returning home to host Mansfield on Sunday.
Â
The Wildcats' Jamie Boyar scored the clincher in the 104th minute, taking a cross from Alex Juliano and sneaking it past
Krista Mosi to put the Wildcats on top. Â To that point Clarion had the better of the opportunities and more of them, outshooting Daemen 17-9 overall and 6-5 in shots on net.
Â
The other big opportunity for the Golden Eagles came in set plays, as they held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. One of those came as time wound down in the first overtime period, when
Stephanie Lias arched a ball in front of the net that was cleared away by Daemen. This came on the heels of
Anna Chamberlin's plum scoring opportunity, when she fired a shot on net that forced Maddie Flores to make a save.Â
McKenzie Sheesley and
Meliah Roman also had cracks on the net late in the first extra frame, but neither could quite get it on net.
Â
Sheesley once again drove offense for Clarion, putting four shots on net to lead both teams. That included back-to-back attempts midway through the second half with the two teams still scoreless.Â
Dani McNally nearly scored the clincher in the 81st minute when she headed a corner cross from Lias just wide of the righthand post.
