ALTOONA, Pa. – The Clarion tennis team earned a victory in its first dual match of the 2017-18 season, sweeping Penn State-Altoona by a score of 9-0 at Leopold Tennis Courts on Thursday. The Golden Eagles (1-0) will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 26 against West Chester.
Â
The Golden Eagles won all nine matches on the courts on Thursday, giving up only six total games in singles play – and no more than one in any set. Doubles was a little closer, as Clarion had to hold off a strong challenge in the No. 2 match.
Â
That challenge came from Altoona's Annie Ruggles and Brayley Lewis, but up to the task were
Katie Benson and
Bailey White. Benson and White held off a charge and claimed a 9-7 decision in the No. 2 doubles match.Â
Alivia Arnold and
Maria Snyder defeated Kate Hugendubler and Sophia Girol by an 8-0 score, and the duo of
Michelle Petrilla and
Hailey Germanoski won the No. 3 doubles match by an 8-3 score.
Â
In singles play, Arnold got the best of Hugendubler again, winning by a 6-0, 6-0 score in the No. 1 singles match. Snyder beat Lewis 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 match, and
Vinisha Reddy won by an identical score in the No. 3 match. White defeated Ruggles by a 6-0, 6-1 score, Benson won in straight sets in the No. 5 match, and Petrilla rounded out the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Victoria Acker in the No. 6 singles match.
