Volleyball Outlasted by Fighting Scots, 3-0

EDINBORO, Pa. – Two extra-long sets proved to be the difference on Friday night, as the Clarion volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (24-26, 15-25, 25-27) match to Edinboro at McComb Fieldhouse.  The Golden Eagles (14-7, 5-3 PSAC) will look for a weekend split tomorrow when they travel to Slippery Rock.

The Golden Eagles struggled in attacking the ball, hitting just .061 against the Fighting Scots.  In both the first and third sets Clarion rallied from deficits on set point to tie the score, but each time Edinboro repulsed them and held on for the victory.

Julia Holden had a team-high 13 kills, while Marissa Robertson and Olivia Olson had eight kills apiece.  Chrissy Cotton continued her torrid pace in digging the ball, recording 25 digs in just three sets.  Robertson added 15 digs while Ashley Poling recorded 13 digs of her own.

At one point in the first set Clarion held a 12-9 lead, thanks to a kill by Holden.  Edinboro tied it up with a 10-3 run to take a 19-15 advantage, but the Golden Eagles scored six of the next seven points to turn the tables, punctuating their run with a solo block from Olson.  Holden tied the score at set point with a kill, making it 24-all, but the Fighting Scots scored the next two points for a 26-24 win.

After Edinboro ran away with a 25-15 win in the second set, Clarion once again pressed the issue in the third set.  Holden bounced a kill to make it 13-11, and Olson tipped one of her own to tie the score up at 19.  After a block by Megan Screptock and Sally Sterkel blocked Lauryn Driscoll to force match point, Aubrey Wrona responded with a kill to tie it.  Olson added another kill to tie the set at 25, but again the Fighting Scots scored two straight to take the game and the match.
