Volleyball Falls to Griffins on the Road

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Clarion volleyball team rallied from a first set loss to tie their match with Seton Hill, but the Golden Eagles fell by a 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 19-25, 13-25) score to the Griffins on Friday.  Clarion (20-10, 11-6 PSAC) closes the regular season tomorrow afternoon against California (Pa.).

With the loss the evening, the Golden Eagles are now assured of opening the PSAC Tournament with a road match, as the Vulcans will hold an FIVB points tiebreaker regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's match.  Clarion currently holds the sixth seed in the field.

Aubrey Wrona had a team-high 13 kills, followed by 12 kills from Olivia Olson and 11 from Julia Holden.  Chrissy Cotton finished with 31 digs over the four sets while Marissa Robertson had 19.  Leah Vensel had a double-double of 45 assists and 12 digs.

The Golden Eagles had a mammoth effort in the second set, hitting .310 as a team to eliminate a 19-12 deficit and tie the team match at 1-1.  A service error by the Griffins gave Clarion the opening they needed for a 4-0 run capped by a block from Aubrey Wrona and Olivia Olson to make it 19-16.  A small run tied the set a few points later, when Wrona took a set from Leah Vensel and bashed it for a kill to knot it up at 21-all.

The Golden Eagles had several set points, including one at 25-24 after a kill from Julia Holden, but it would not be until another Griffin error that Clarion would buckle down for the point.  Wrona hit a kill on set point to make it 27-25 and momentarily put the Griffins back on their heels.

Seton Hill responded in the third set, putting together a 6-0 run midway through to turn a narrow 15-14 advantage into a 21-14 chasm.  They scored four of the final six points to take the set 25-19, and then went on to control long stretches of action in the fourth set en route to a 25-13 win.
