CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Clarion volleyball team wrapped up its regular season by avenging a loss that came earlier this year, defeating California (Pa.) 3-1 (25-22, 33-35, 25-23, 25-17) on the road on Saturday afternoon.
As a result of the weekend's action, the Golden Eagles (21-10, 12-6 PSAC) will enter the PSAC Tournament as the sixth seed in the field, setting them up for yet another match with Seton Hill in Greensburg. The two teams met just last night, with the Griffins taking a 3-1 match win.
Before that, though, there was the matter of the Vulcans that needed addressing. Clarion and California traded three very close sets to start the match before the Golden Eagles pulled away for the win in the fourth, including a marathon second set ended up with a winning score of 35. The statistics from the match were gaudy as well, with the teams combining for 220 total digs and 17.0 total blocks in just four sets of action.
Julia Holden had an inspired effort on offense, ripping 21 kills to lead both teams and put her at 433 total kills on the season. With 10 more she will crack the top-10 for a single season in program history, tying Jennifer Betters' 443 kills in 1995.
Chrissy Cotton had 32 digs – an average of 8.00 digs per set – to go over 700 for the season. With 721 digs, she needs just nine pore to surpass
Rhianon Brady for fifth-most in a single season.
Marissa Robertson and
Aubrey Wrona both ripped off kill-dig double-doubles, with Robertson recording 12 kills and 25 digs and Wrona a combo of 15 kills and 19 digs.
Leah Vensel had her own double-double of 55 assists and 11 digs.
Clarion trailed 19-17 in the first set before scoring two straight to tie it up, and Wrona put the team ahead 21-20 with a kill. Robertson followed with another to make it 22-20, and a ball-handling error by the Vulcans put the Golden Eagles at set point. An attack error by California proved the difference in the first set as Clarion took the game 25-22.
The second set was a back-and-forth marathon session, with neither team pulling away until the Vulcans managed three straight points late. Things were knotted up at 32 before Holden put the Golden Eagles ahead by one with a kill, but California posted kills on three straight points to take the 35-33 decision. Undeterred by the long set, Clarion jumped out to an early lead in the third. The Vulcans eventually pulled ahead 18-17, but Holden and
Olivia Olson combined for a block on Lois van Schaik to make it 20-19. Two straight errors by Sarah Moehring came at an inopportune time for California, as they gave the Golden Eagles the 25-23 set win.
From there the fourth set was a comparative breeze, as Clarion opened up a 9-4 lead that eventually became a 17-10 advantage. The Vulcans inched close late before Wrona and Robertson shut the door with kills.
