CLARION, Pa. – Two Golden Eagles won titles and three others took second place at the Clarion Open, as the Clarion wrestling team welcomed teams from across the country to the Student Recreation Center for a season-opening tournament.
Â
Tyshawn White and
Brock Zacherl won the 125- and 149-pound weight classes, respectively, highlighting the day and capping a successful weekend for the Golden Eagle wrestling program. White won three matches on Saturday while Zacherl won five, with each going undefeated in their brackets for the win.
Â
White was the first to claim his title, opening with a bye to the quarterfinal round where he defeated Kent State's Tomas Gutierrez by technical fall. He followed with a major decision over Penn State's Justin Lopez, defeating him 8-0, which put him in the championship bout against Kent State's Jake Ferri. White jumped out to a big lead over Ferri and held on throughout, taking the 18-9 major decision and the win.
Â
The 149-pound bracket was more heavily populated, but Zacherl found his way through the field for his fourth straight Clarion Open title. He started off with a technical fall over Noah Caskey of the Naval Academy Prep School and then majored Cleveland State's Sam Matzek. Lock Haven's Collin Glorioso provided a good test in the quarterfinal round but Zacherl dispatched him with a 4-0 decision, and the redshirt senior beat Kent State's Kody Komara in the semifinal round by major decision to reach the title bout. He faced off with another Bald Eagle in the final, defeating Jonathan Ross 10-4 for the championship.
Â
In addition, three other Golden Eagles reached the finals of their respective brackets, finishing in second place in each. Evan Delong went 4-1 in the 165-pound bracket with three major decisions before falling in the championship bout to Kent State's Isaac Bast, the fourth-place finisher in the MAC in 2018.Â
Greg Bulsak rushed his way to the finals of the 197-pound bracket, starting with two wins by fall. He fell in the championship bracket to the highly-regarded Michael Beard by a score of 13-9.Â
Taylor Cahill won three straight matches to start the 174-pound bracket before falling narrowly to Kent State's Dylan Barreiro in a 4-3 decision.
