Wrestling Falls to LHU on Senior Day, 28-12

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion wrestling team honored its three seniors before their match against 23rd-ranked Lock Haven on Sunday, with the Bald Eagles taking a 28-12 decision over the Golden Eagles at Marwick-Boyd Auditorium.  Clarion (9-5, 4-2 EWL) will close out their dual match season this weekend with bouts against Eastern Michigan, Michigan State and West Virginia.

Dustin Conti, Dom Rigous and Brodie Zacherl were all recognized before the start of the match, with the duo of Rigous and Conti winning their senior day bouts at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively.  However, the Bald Eagles provided a tough challenge for Clarion, winning seven bouts en route to a team victory.

Rigous was victorious at 174 pounds, holding off Jared Siegrist for a 1-0 decision in which neither wrestler could truly get the offense going.  The only scoring of the bout came when Rigous scored an escape to make it 1-0, and he made it count by holding off Siegrist for the remainder.  It appeared at one point Rigous expanded the lead to 3-0 with a takedown, but a challenge from Lock Haven's Scott Moore saw the call overturned and the deficit reset to one point with 1:35 remaining.  Rigous and Siegrist locked antlers the rest of the way but neither could take the other down, with Rigous holding on for the 1-0 decision.

Conti scored the first points of the 197-pound bout, as well, starting the second period in the bottom position but reversing Trey Hartsock for two points.  He countered a shot from Hartsock late in the third period, coming around him and taking him down to take a 4-0 advantage.  He racked up more than enough riding time to claim the additional point, and despite Hartsock escaping, Conti held on for the win.

Gavin Park and Luke Werner started the 125-pound match with a back-and-forth of shots and roll throughs, with Park getting the better of his opponent in the early going to take a 2-1 lead.  Werner caught Park with a takedown with 26 seconds left to take a 4-2 lead, and eventually added another to finish with a 7-4 decision.  Also with a strong effort against a tough opponent was Taylor Ortz, who caught nationally-ranked Ronnie Perry with a late shot to pull within striking distance.  Perry held the early advantage over Ortz, leading 5-0 in the third period before Ortz finally escaped his grasp.  He fired back and caught Perry's ankle for a takedown, but was unable to get the tilt to finish off Perry in falling 6-3.

Wrapping up the day was Toby Cahill, who pushed nationally-ranked heavyweight Thomas Haines to the limit in the first period before ultimately falling to him in the final bout of the day.  Cahill caught Haines with a high shot and tossed him to the mat, scoring the takedown and four back points before Haines reversed his way out.  Haines took control of the bout from there en route to a 12-6 decision.
