Strong pitching powers Clarion to sweep of Alderson Broaddus

HARTSVILLE, Sc. – After a tough loss on Friday, the Clarion baseball team bounced back on Saturday, picking up a double-header sweep of Alderson Broaddus by scores of 9-1 and 5-0.

The Golden Eagles move to 2-1 on the young season while the Battlers drop to 0-2.

Game 1
After being no-hit for four frames against Alderson Broaddus' Zach Salmon, the Golden Eagles finally broke through in the 5th with back to back 2-run, 2-out singles by Nick Fugh and Dillon Wolbert.

Clarion added one run in the 6th and tacked on 4 more in the 7th to cruise to the game 1 victory.

Freshman pitcher Dereck Pritchard earned the win on the mound in his debut, allowing five hits and one run over five innings of work, fanning five Battlers batters and only walking 1.

The Golden Eagles had 7 hits in the game. Nick Fugh and Dillon Wolbert led the hit parade for the Golden Eagles, each going 2 for 4.

Game 2
Junior transfer Branden Schlick carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, and went on to finish off a complete game shutout in the 5-0 victory. Schlick was in command all game, giving up just 3 hits while striking out nine.

The scoring got started in the second inning when a single from Austin Blauser brought around Cole Shaffer to give Clarion a 1-0 lead.

The score would remain 1-0 up until the bottom of the 6th when Clarion struck for 4 runs thanks to a single from Matt Privette, a sac fly from Will Constantin and a double from Dillon Wolbert to put the game out of reach.

The blue and gold tallied 8 hits with multiple hits from Privette and Fugh. Privette led the way in the box for Clarion going 3 for 3.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action next weekend when they travel to West Virginia to take on West Virginia State University.
