Softball Swept by Golden Bears

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Clarion softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday, falling by scores of 7-2 and 9-1 to Kutztown as part of the PFX Spring Games.  The Golden Eagles (2-12) will close their week tomorrow with a doubleheader against Northwestern Ohio.

Rebecca Kelley bashed her first home run of the season in the early game against the Golden Bears, a solo shot with one out that nearly sparked a Clarion rally.  The Golden Eagles got two more runners aboard with two outs but was unable to finish the comeback, as they stranded the pair at the corners. Kelley was one of five Golden Eagles with hits in the first game, while Cassidy Runyan drove in the other run.

In the late game, Jessica Cartia went 2-for-2 with an RBI, driving in Moriah Lynn in the fourth inning.  Macy Rubin (0-2) took the loss in Game 1 with seven runs allowed – but just one earned – while Sarah Gossard (1-5) allowed seven runs in the second game.

Kutztown struck first in Game 1, scoring two runs in the first and adding three more in the second to take a 5-0 lead.  The advantage eventually reached 6-0 before Runyan plated Clarion's first run in the fourth.  Cartia hit a two-out double to the gap in right center, and Runyan launched one to the gap in left center to bring her home and make it 6-1.  The Golden Bears made it 7-1 in the seventh inning before Kelley's blast.

The Golden Bears enjoyed a four-run first in Game 2 to make it 4-0, and held a 7-0 lead before Clarion's first run of the game.  Moriah Lynn reached on a fielder's choice, making it a two-out situation, and eventually came around to score after an error from the left fielder on Cartia's single.
