BUTLER, Pa. – The Clarion baseball team had a tough day against the ninth-ranked team in the country, falling by scores of 5-3 and 15-3 to the Mercyhurst Lakers at Kelly Automotive Park. The Golden Eagles (7-26, 2-18 PSAC West) will be back in action this week when they play a doubleheader against Penn State-DuBois on Wednesday.
Game 1
The first game of the day was the more closely contested of the two, as the Golden Eagles nearly rallied from a three-run deficit but ultimately fell 5-3 to the Lakers. The score was just a 3-2 Mercyhurst advantage from the top of the fourth inning until the top of the seventh as Clarion held close with their nationally-ranked foe.
Jeremy Frazier (2-6) allowed three runs in six innings pitched but avoided the big inning, allowing just one run apiece in three different frames. The Golden Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when
Cole Shaffer drove a single to left field, scoring
Max Mari from first base after catcher Drew Delsignore booted the throw from the outfield.
Mike Connell then brought him home with a single to right field, making it 2-1.
Mercyhurst got the run back in the third with a solo home run, added another in the fourth, and then scored two in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.
Nick Fugh scored
Matt Privette with an RBI single in the home half of the inning to cut it to two runs, but the Lakers held on for the win.
Game 2
Despite the lopsided final score, the second game between the Golden Eagles and the Lakers was actually very close through four innings of action. Mercyhurst got on the board first, scoring on an errant throw from third base in the top of the second inning, but Connell responded with an RBI single in the fourth that scored
Dillon Wolbert.
Things went the way of the Lakers from there, though, as they erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. Shaffer plated Privette with an RBI single in the sixth inning but by then the damage was done. Mercyhurst eventually built a 15-2 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, and though
Dan Janoson scored on a passed ball in the final frame, the Lakers took the win.
