Shippensburg tops Clarion in straight sets

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion women's volleyball team fell to a tough Shippensburg squad Saturday afternoon in straight sets, 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 15-25).

The Golden Eagles drop to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference while Shippensburg improves to 11-2 and 2-0 in the PSAC.

Clarion, coming off a PSAC victory last night against Pitt-Johnstown, got off to a slow start in the first set and found themselves trailing 8-2 early on.

Back to back kills by senior Lauryn Driscoll helped Clarion rattle off four straight points to cut the lead to 13-10 but a steady Raider attack combined with the help of some unforced errors propelled Shippensburg to a 25-19 decision in set one.

The second set was back and forth from start to finish, and the Golden Eagles found themselves in the lead 18-17 thanks to back to back kills from freshman Aubrey Wrona.  However the Raiders rattled off three consecutive points, highlighted by a pair of kills from Morgan DeFloria to regain the lead and capture set two, while taking a commanding 2-0 match lead in the process.

The Raiders kept their momentum rolling, jumping out to a 10-1 lead in the third set and didn't look back, finishing the match with a 25-15 victory.

Driscoll led the Golden Eagles on Saturday with eight kills, followed by Wrona with seven and Olivia Olson with six.

Leah Vensel added 29 assists to her season total while Christina Cotton chipped in with 22 digs.

The Raiders were led by  DeFloria, who had a match-high 15 kills on the day.

Clarion will be on the road next weekend with trips to Lock Haven on Friday (Sep 21) and Bloomsburg on Saturday (Sep 22).
