Daemen upsets Soccer 2-0

CLARION, Pa. – Riding a three game win streak, the Clarion University women's soccer team fell to Daemen College in a non-conference mid-week match up at Memorial Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, 2-0.

The Golden Eagles drop to 4-10-1 on the year and remain 3-9-1 in the PSAC West, while Daemen who plays in the ECC improves to 9-3-3 on the year.

A defensive battle throughout the entire first half, Daemen broke the 0-0 gridlock with just under a minute left to play in the period when Alyssa Mercado snuck one past keeper Brigid Stermel to give the Wildcats the lead heading into halftime. Until that goal, both teams were pretty much even all half with Daemen totaling six total shots, while Clarion ended the half with three.

Coming out hot on offense in the second half the Golden Eagles peppered the Daemen keeper, Maddie Flores with eight shots but couldn't get on the scoreboard. Meliah Roman led the charge for Clarion with three shots on goal, while Julianna Iocco and Abigail Sullivan each had one of their own.

The Wildcats also came out firing in the second half totaling seven shots but Stermel stood her ground. Jamie Boyar gave Daemen the commanding 2-0 lead in the 65th minute of action finding the back of net off an assist from Erin Egan taking the wind out of the sails for the Blue and Gold.

Clarion keeper Stermel registered six saves, while Brynn Markley played the final 13 minutes of action.

Clarion will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Erie to take the Lakers of Mercyhurst. First kick is set for 5 pm.
