CLERMONT, Fla. – The Clarion softball team finished up its third day at the PFX Spring Games on Tuesday, falling by scores of 7-6 to Bloomfield and 9-3 to Malone. The Golden Eagles (0-12) will resume action tomorrow with games against Wayne State (Neb.) and Northern College.
Â
Nicole Collins went 5-of-7 at the plate with three runs and two RBIs, including a double against Malone and her first career home run against Bloomfield.Â
Hannah Norton also enjoyed a multi-hit game on Tuesday, going 2-of-3 against the Pioneers in the late game.Â
Â
Chelsea Liroff (0-3) suffered the loss against the Bears, allowing the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning that allowed Bloomfield to take the win. She entered in relief of
Macy Rubin, who allowed five runs in 3.2 innings pitched.Â
Rebecca Kelley (0-5) allowed six runs against the Pioneers in the loss.
Â
Clarion's game against the Bears saw the Golden Eagles erase deficits of 3-0 and 5-3, with the team pulling even late in the game before allowing two runs in the top of the seventh inning.Â
Moriah Lynn started things off with an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning, bringing
Brooke Cline around to score, and Collins followed that up with a double of her own to score Lynn.Â
Jessica Cartia ripped an RBI single to tie the score in the bottom of the third, bringing Collins across to make it 3-3.
Â
The Bears responded with two runs in the fourth inning, but a freak play in the sixth inning started another Golden Eagle rally.Â
Natalie Else took off from third on
Molly Cowden's steal of second base, attempting to come across home plate on the throw to shortstop. Brianna Johnson instead threw down the third base line but struck Else, who advanced home on the error.Â
Katie Zameroski added an RBI double to tie the game at 5-5, but Mariah Wysocki hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh to put Bloomfield ahead 7-5. Collins responded with a solo home run, but it was not enough as the Bears held on for the win.
Â
The Golden Eagles opened the second game with back-to-back RBIs in the first inning, starting with a double by freshman
Makenzie Wolfe and followed by another run-scoring single from Cartia. The Pioneers scored seven unanswered runs to pull ahead 7-2, with
Taylor Nonnenberg's score on a wild pitch the sole run the rest of the game for Clarion.
