WASHINGTON, Pa.. – Despite leading in game one of a four game series, the Clarion baseball team dropped both games of a double header to Cal U, falling 3-1 in the early game, followed by a 5-1 loss in the nightcap.
The losses drop Clarion to 15-19 overall and 5-9 in the PSAC West while Cal U improves to 24-8, 10-4 in conference play
Game 1
In game one scoring was at a minimum, but Clarion got on the board first in the top of the first inning thanks to a single to right field by
Brian Casper that brought around
Chandler Palyas to score who double in the previous at bat.
The Vulcans tied things up and took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a 2-out double to right center field that cleared the bases and gave Cal U the 3-1 lead and ultimately the game as neither team could push another run across the plate.
The Golden Eagles threatened to tie things up in the top of the seventh inning but their comeback was cut short as
Dillon Wolbert lined out to center field, stranding two baserunners after notching two hits in the inning.
Nick Riggle picked up the win for Cal U tossing a complete game six hitter, surrendering just one run while striking out five Blue and Gold batters.
Nate Torbich (2-3) took the loss for the Blue and Gold hurling six complete innings allowing three earned runs and five hits while striking out four.
A host of Golden Eagles picked up hits in the game with Casper leading the way, going 1 of 3 driving in the lone Clarion run.
Game 2
The Vulcans scored early and often to put the game out of reach promptly scoring all five of their runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Cal U picked up their five runs on a SAC fly, a single and a double that cleared the bases pushing the score to 5-0.
The score would remain the same until the top of the fourth inning after Palyas walked and advanced into scoring position for
Thomas Lavin. Lavin grounded out to third base but that allowed Palyas to score and make the score 5-1.
Kyle Thompson got the start on the mound for Clarion but was chased from the game early, throwing just 1.2 innings allowing five earned runs on four hits while walking one.
Bryce Grenet took over for Thompson in the 2
nd, tossing 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball allowing just three hits and fanning six Vulcan batters.
Three players picked up hits for Clarion, leaving just two men on base the entire game and were unable to break through to the Vulcan starter.
Clarion will be back in action tomorrow when they play for Friedreich's Ataxia Awareness and conclude the four game series against the Vulcans. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
