Nonnenberg Has Big Day, but Softball Falls at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Clarion softball team started a divisional road swing on Friday afternoon, falling by scores of 10-2 and 12-2 to Bloomsburg in a doubleheader.  The Golden Eagles (0-33, 0-10 PSAC Central) will look to rebound this weekend when they take on IUP tomorrow afternoon.

Taylor Nonnenberg went 2-for-5 with three RBI's on the day, bringing home runners with RBI doubles in both ends of the doubleheader.  She put Clarion ahead 2-1 in the first game with a gap shot to left center, scoring Moriah Lynn and Molly Cowden in the top of the third inning to put the Golden Eagles on top.  She did the same in the top of the first in the second game, sending a double into left field to score Lynn and briefly give Clarion the 1-0 lead.

Bloomsburg shot ahead 3-1 in the in the second game after an RBI groundout by Taylor Winkelman, but Rebecca Kelley got one run back in the top of the third inning.  After Lynn reached base on an error at second, Makenzie Wolfe followed with a single to put her in scoring position. Kelley lined a single through the right side of the infield, bringing Lynn around from second base to cut the lead to 3-2.  The Huskies followed with a seven-spot in the home half of the inning, though, going ahead 10-2.  They tacked on two more runs in the fourth to set the final deficit at 12-2.

Clarion held the Huskies off the board in the first inning of the first game, and took a 2-1 lead thanks to some opportunistic offense.  Cowden reached on a one-out single and Lynn got on base thanks to an error at shortstop, setting the table for Nonnenberg.  She took the first pitch of the at-bat to the left-center gap, scoring the runners to put the Golden Eagles up 2-1.  Bloomsburg went scoreless in the bottom of the third but scored six in the fourth to make it 7-2, and then tacked on three more runs in the fifth to end the game.
