Tennis Drops Close Match with Cal U

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion tennis team split the singles session with Cal U on Saturday afternoon, but the Golden Eagles were unable to get the win in falling 4-3 to the Vulcans at Campbell Courts.  Clarion (1-7, 0-3 PSAC West) will host their senior day on Wednesday, April 10 when they welcome Edinboro to town.

The two teams split the six singles matches on the court, with the Golden Eagles winning three matches at the bottom of the lineup to nearly take the team competition from Cal U.  The Vulcans took all three doubles matches, though, earning the extra point and clinching the team victory.

Two of the three Golden Eagles wins involved tiebreakers of some sort, with Katie Benson taking a third set and Sarah Kirmeyer winning a first set tiebreaker in the No. 6 singles match.  Benson dropped the first set of the No. 4 singles match to Elizabeth Wohar by a score of 6-4, but then won the second set by an identical score.  The third set tiebreaker was close, but Benson held on for a 10-7 win in the pro set.

Kirmeyer's victory over Fulvia Camargo involved a first set tiebreaker in which Kirmeyer picked up a dominant 7-1 win to take the first set.  She was strong in the second set as well, winning 6-1 to clinch the win.  Michelle Petrilla also recorded a win on Saturday, defeating Charlie Gallagher 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 3 singles match.
