Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Falls in Twinbill to Slippery Rock

BUTLER, Pa. – Ending their four game series against PSAC West foe Slippery Rock, the Clarion baseball team closed the weekend, falling by scores of 5-0 and 6-4 to The Rock at Historic Pullman Park. The Golden Eagles (14-17, 5-7 PSAC West) will look to get back into the win column when they head to Dubois, Pa. to take on Penn State Dubois, Tuesday, April 9th for a doubleheader starting at 6 pm

Alex Ficorilli went a combined 4-for-7 at the dish with two runs batted in and one score, while Chandler Palyas, Nick Fugh and Bryce Jackson went 1-of-3 in the first game.  Cole Shaffer enjoyed a multi-hit performance in Game 2 as well, going 2-of-3.

Kyler Mellott (2-4) fell to Slippery Rock's Wyatt Daugherty in the early game, allowing five runs in 4.0 innings pitched.  The Rock got the scoring started early with the leadoff hitter Frankie Jezioro launching a homerun to deep centerfield making it 1-0. Joe Campagna matched that with a homerun of his own just two batters later to give Slippery Rock an early 2-0 lead.

First basemen Colin Cain stretched The Rock lead to three when he sent a solo shot of his own to right field taking all the momentum from the Blue and Gold. The Rock would score two more runs, one in the third inning off of an Abraham Mow double down the left field line and again in the fifth when Jezioro hit his second homer of the game this time to left field ending the scoring for SRU.

In Game 2, Clarion jumped out to a 3-0 lead courtesy of a Ficorilli triple in the first and a Fugh groundout that plated Ficorilli. Shaffer tacked on the third run in the fourth inning when he singled driving in Ben Barth.

The Rock scored the next six runs over the span of the sixth and seventh inning to regain the lead. Ficorilli singled in the bottom of the seventh to score Shaffer pulling Clarion back within two but Slippery Rock reliever Alex Worthington closed the door on the Golden Eagles.
