Soccer Falls to Pitt-Johnstown on the Road

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Clarion women's soccer hit the road on Wednesday, falling in a tough 5-1 result to Pitt-Johnstown. The Golden Eagles now 1-3-1 and 0-3-0 in the PSAC West will return home to host Edinboro on Saturday.

The Mountain Cats played a strong home game in limiting Clarion's opportunities, as the Golden Eagles attacked but were only able to put one goal on the scoreboard. After Abby LaDuke scored on a header in the top left corner of the net in the 17th minute of action and Emily Esser scored on a cross from Kierra Miller to make the score 2-0 the Golden Eagles battled back.

Clarion scored to cut the deficit in half in the 33rd minute of action when Julianna Iocco played a through ball to Madison Spitko who beat the Mountain Cat keeper to pull the Blue and Gold within striking distance.

UPJ poured on the offense from that point on adding one more goal in the first half and two in the second. The Mountain Cats scored less than 10 minutes after Clarion cut the lead to one when Jenna Brown finished a cross from Esser to make the score 3-1. The Mountain Cats then scored in the 65th and 76th minutes of action to put the game out of reach 5-1.

Alexis Moyer and Spitko were the top threats for Clarion, with each recording three shots a piece. Senior Brigid Stermel got the start in net and made nine saves.

Clarion had a pair of corner kick opportunities but could not convert them into goals. Moyer took a corner kick in the 87th minute and Grace Mullen added one in the 90th minute, but both opportunities were shut down by the UPJ keeper.

Clarion totaled nine total shots on the day, with five of those shots being on net. Both were season highs for the Blue and Gold, while Pitt-Johnstown sprayed the net with 30 total shots, 15 of which were on net.
