ERIE, Pa. - Heading to Erie for the second time in as many weeks, the Clarion women's soccer team fell to the Gannon Golden Knights 1-0 in a hard fought matchup. The loss moves the Golden Eagles to 0-2-0 on the young season, while Gannon improves to 2-1-0 on the year.Â
On a day in which Gannon honored six seniors, it wasn't until an early second half goal that the Golden Knights put a stamp on their senior day.Â
Clarion threatened to take the lead in the 40th minute when
Macy McCarthy placed a shot in the top right corner of the net, but Morgan Sinan was able to make a great save ending the Clarion attack.
At the 56:37 mark Gannon's Kayla Bevacqua scored the lone goal of the game off an assist from Laurel Prokopchak as she broke free on the right side and chipped the ball across the net to beat the keeper Velez.
Although Clarion mananged to play much of the game in the neutral zone or the attack end of the field, the Golden Eagles didn't register their second shot of the game until the 77:18 mark when
Madison Spitko missed wide right after beating a few Golden Knight defenders.Â
Brynn Markley and
Alexandra Velez split time in net for head coach
Alexa Ream as Markley, who notched the start, registered four saves in one half of action and Velez managed to stonewall Gannon three times on four shots.
Clarion will make a quick turnaround this week as they head to Mount Aloysius on Tuesday, April 14 to take on the Mounties. First kick from teh pitch is slated for 7 pm.
