ERIE, Pa. - Making a trip north to Erie in their first return to the pitch since 2019, the Clarion women's soccer team fell to PSAC West powerhouse Mercyhurst 4-0 on Wednesday evening, marking the first game under with new head coach
Alexa Ream at the helm.
When asked about Clarion's performance in their first time on the pitch as a team, Ream had nothing but praise stating, "I'm extremely proud of this group after a disciplined and determined performance. After not competing for over a year, and asking many of our players to play seventy minutes or more, the work rate across the board was a pleasure to see."
Keeping the Mercyhurst goaltender on her toes,
Jaci Bowser and
Kayla Papale both recorded shots for the Golden Eagles in the match, but couldn't find a way to beat the Laker keeper.
After allowing three Mercyhurst goals in the first half, the Clarion defense buckled down and held the Laker attack in check in the second frame, allowing just one goal.
With a positive tone, Ream said, "We're excited to continue to build off of this game and improve throughout the rest of our spring season."
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-1 overall, while the Lakers improve to an early 1-0 on the young season.
Clarion will be back in action when they make another trip to Erie to take on the Gannon Golden Knights on Sunday, April 11. Kick-off is set for 4:30 pm from McConnell Family Stadium.
