ERIE, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle volleyball team tied their longest win streak of the season with their tenth straight victory on Friday night, sweeping Mercyhurst 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-18) at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Clarion improved to 20-1 overall and 10-0 in PSAC West competition with a dominant effort over the Lakers.
Â
After a couple of matches where they didn't display their trademark offensive firepower, the Golden Eagles brought it in spades on Friday night, hitting .321 against Mercyhurst. Clarion was particularly dominant in the second and third sets, hitting .418 in that span.
Julia Piccolino went off for 19 kills in just three sets, while
Cassidy Snider added 16 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Both Piccolino and Snider broke the double-digit dig mark for a kill-dig double-double, while setter
London Fuller had 39 assists and 12 digs for a double-double as well.
Â
The teams traded points early in the first set, but a 7-1 Golden Eagle run soon put the result out of question. Snider got things going with a kill and then followed up with a service ace to make it 12-9.
Alyson Peters kept the run going with a block of Kate Hennessy, and
Lauren Aichinger eventually ran it up to 17-10 with a kill. Fuller tipped one over to make it 20-16, and the Golden Eagles took the first set on a Piccolino kill that made it 25-19.
Â
Clarion got off to a dominant start in the second set, going up 8-2 after
Amy Regrut and
Lauren Aichinger added a block and a kill apiece on consecutive points. Snider made it 10-4 with a kill and another run pushed the lead to near double-digits, as Fuller dropped in an ace to make it 15-6. The deficit finally did reach 10 points after an error by the Lakers, and
Charlie Allison made it 21-10 with a kill. The sophomore middle added another on set point to take the win at 25-14. The third set was tight until the midway point, when a 6-1 Clarion run that was punctuated by two kills from Piccolino made it 21-15. Snider scored the winning kill on match point to give the Golden Eagles another PSAC West sweep.
Â
The Golden Eagles out-aced the Lakers 5-1, and more than doubled them up in the kills department with a 51-24 advantage.
