CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle soccer team saw their 2022 season come to a close on Saturday night, as Clarion fell by a 4-0 score to Slippery Rock at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Eagles played within a goal of the Rock for much of the game, but a 210-second stretch in the second half saw Slippery Rock tack on three goals.
Â
Much as in their previous three meetings over the last two years, the Rock peppered the Golden Eagle side with shots on net. Goalkeeper
Alex Velez made 12 saves, including nine in a second half where Slippery Rock controlled much of the action. Clarion, conversely, was only able to manage three shots on goalkeeper Emma Yoder.
Â
Kayla Swope opened the scoring for the Rock, re-directing Sydney Patrick's corner kick for the first goal of the game. That represented the only scoring for either side as Clarion's defense did enough to keep Slippery Rock at bay. The Rock, though, scored three goals in the span of three minutes and 30 seconds in the second half, with Maddie DeLucio, Brooke Riefenstahl and Morgan Sarver all putting one past the keeper.
Â
The best Golden Eagle scoring opportunities came in the second half as things opened up a bit.
Iliana Calcamuggio carried the ball through traffic and pounded a hard shot on net in the 70
th minute, and seven minutes later
Savannah Houk fired one on Yoder from 30 yards out. In each instance Yoder made the necessary adjustment to make the stop as she held the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard.
