CLARION, Pa. – The Golden Eagle men's basketball team took on one of the top teams in the PSAC West on Saturday, with Clarion unable to keep pace with Pitt-Johnstown in falling by a 90-58 score in Tippin Gymnasium. The Mountain Cats got hot from the field and stayed that way throughout in dealing the Golden Eagles the home loss.
Â
The Golden Eagle seniors were given a sendoff in a pregame ceremony on Saturday, and one of those seniors in particular came out of the gates firing.
Mason Mraz drained three three-pointers in the first seven minutes of action, working in concert with
Gerald Jarmon to put Clarion on top early. Mraz finished with a season-high 12 points while Jarmon pumped in 22 points. Mraz's second trey of the game made it an 8-5 advantage, and Jarmon knocked one down at the 14:33 mark to make it 11-7. Mraz closed the rally with his third three-pointer, making it 14-9.
Â
The Mountain Cats took the lead, though they briefly relinquished it when Jarmon hauled in a defensive rebound and rushed down the court for a fast break jumper at the 7:57 mark. Andy Zuchelli scored a transition bucket at the 7:40 mark to retake the lead for Pitt-Johnstown, and they never lost the advantage again. Pitt-Johnstown went on a mammoth run to end the half, building up a 45-29 lead at the break after a fast break make from Ryan Smith at the 20-second mark.
Â
That pressure kept up in the second half as well as the lead continued to creep higher. John Paul Kromka made it 50-29 just 93 seconds into the second half, and eventually the Mountain Cats' lead reached 30 points when Kromka finished off an and-one. Â The lead remained in that neighborhood for the remainder of the game as the Mountain Cats collected the road victory.
