Gerald Jarmon Had a Career Night, Scoring 51 Points, Second Most in a Single Game in School History, but Men's Hoops Falls to Edinboro 88-74

CLARION, Pa. - The Clarion men's basketball team hosted the Edinboro Fighting Scots Monday night, falling by a final score of 88-74. The loss moves the Golden Eagles to 9-12 on the year, while Boro improves to 6-14 overall.

The visiting Fighting Scots took an early 4-0 advantage to start the game, but Gerald Jarmon buried a deep three on the right wing in front of the Edinboro bench to put Clarion down just 4-3 with 18:27 left in the first half.

After Jarmon forced a steal and a foul, it was Edinboro making the most of it, stopping the Clarion attack and adding five straight points to make the score 9-3 heading into the first media timeout.

Terrance Moore converted the and one free throw out of the timeout, to put the Fighting Scots up 10-3, but big man and graduate student Lawrence Lemon went up and under with a layup of his own as Clarion made the score 10-5.

After an Edinboro bucket on the opposite end of the floor, Jarmon hit a signature step back jumper to make the score 12-7 with 14:29 left in the first half , as the Golden Eagles slowly clawed their way back into the game.

With a hand in his face, Jarmon picked up the Golden Eagles 10th point of the game and Jarmon's eighth of the contest as Clarion trailed 15-10 with 13:17 left in the first half of play.

Jordan Agyemang called for a pass in the high post, drove right and drew an on the floor foul, which allowed him to grab a rebound on he missed inbound shot, powering up and through two defenders for the bucket.

With Clarion trailing 19-12 coming out of the under 12 minute media timeout, Edinboro pushed their lead to double digits as an 8-0 put the Blue and Gold on their heels. Kaison Branch inbounded the ball at the 8:52 mark and found Lemon who was fouled on the shot, going one for two at the charity stripe to make the score 28-13.

The Fighting Scots stretched their lead to 31-13 before Jarmon made a layup off of an assist from Mekhi Reynolds and Lemon buried a pointer in the corner to make the score 31-18.

Agyemang brought the crowd to their feet when he took a pass from Reynolds and slammed home a huge left handed dunk to make the score 34-21. On the very next Clarion possession, Jarmon was fouled landing on a three point attempt and made all three free throws to pull Clarion back within 11 points 34-23 with just 4:46 left to play in the first frame.

After an Alex Jay turnover, Agyemang was fouled on the opposite end of the floor by Will Taylor and after knocking down both free shots, Clarion was back within striking distance down nine points 34-25.

As Clarion picked up the defensive intensity, Edinboro got more and more sloppy with the basketball. A Deontae Robertson turnover led to another Agyemang old fashioned three point play as the stretch four made a layup off of another assist from Reynolds and made the freeby to make the score 36-28.

After a small Edinboro run, Jarmon continued his hot shooting streak, making yet again, another three pointer in front of the Boro sideline as Clarion trailed 41-31 with 2:04 left to play in the first half.

With 44 seconds remaining in the first half, Jarmon left a defender on skates, elevated for a three at the top of the key and made the shot, being fouled as he came to a landing, the sure shooting free throw shooter knocked down the shot, and put Clarion down single digits, 44-35.

Reynolds rattled a three in and out with time expiring in the first half, as the Golden Eagles trailed 46-35 at the half. Jarmon led all scorers with 20 first half points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field and a perfect 4 or 4 from the free throw line.

Two Golden Eagles, Agyemang and Lemon,  went into the locker room with four rebounds, while Lemon added one assist and one block to his statline. Clarion shot 38% from the floor and 39% from beyond the arc, while shooting an impressive 73% from the free throw line.

Clarion started the half picking up multiple defensive stops, but after Lemon picked up two quick fouls just one minute into action, Moore went to the line and added two free throws to open the second half scoring for both teams.

Jarmon got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles on a pull up jumper to make the score 48-37, and after an Edinboro score, Jarmon hit another jumper, this time from the opposite corner, with 17:22 left in the second half to make the score 50-39.

Jarmon ran his defender, Cyrie Coates, off of a screen from Madior Seye for his third straight basket to make the score 52-41, but again the Scots answered with a basket on the offensive end and with 16:12 left to play in the game Clarion trailed 54-41.

Kaison Branch put his head down and drove past his defender to the right, using sheer strength to power past the Boro defender to make the score 57-43, but with Edinboro matching Clarion's two with a three the lead grew to 60-43 with 15 minutes left to play.

With Edinboro using an 8-0 run to build a 66-43 lead, Mason Mraz ended the Clarion scoring drought with a layup on the right side of the hoop after grabbing an offensive rebound to make the score 68-45 with 12:36 remaining in the game.

The visiting team stretched the lead to 74-48, but after a Lemon layup and a Jarmon steal and score the Blue and Gold pulled back within 22 points, trailing 74-52. Steve Kelly grabbed a rebound on a Fighting Scots miss and raced the length of the floor for his first points of the contest as Clarion was down 74-54 with just over nine minutes left in the contest.

After a Coates turnover, heading out of the media timeout, Jarmon made another jumper at the 8:47 mark to make the score 74-56.

Just two points shy of his career high, Jarmon led all scorers with 33 points with 7:38 left to play in the game, and topped his career high with a three pointer with 7:05 left in the game to give him 36 total points.

Jarmon continued to stay hot, making a layup on the next basket to make the score 77-61 in favor of the opposition.

Taking the Clarion offense into his own hands, Jarmon crossed over his defender and hit a step back jumper from the short right corner to give him 40 points on the night and to make the score 81-63.

The pure scoring Jarmon wasn't done yet, as he drove right and drew another foul and after two good free throws, Jarmon put himself into second place in the Clarion record books for points scored in a single game with 43.

Finishing the game just five points behind Clarion great Kwame Morton Sr. and a scoring record that has stood since 1994, Jarmon and the Clarion attack just ran out of clock as the Golden Eagles fell by a final score of 88-74.

Jarmon finished the game with 51 points on 19 of 29 shooting in 40 minutes of action, while Agyemang added nine points and Lemon finished with eight.

Clarion will now head to Edinboro on February 9th, looking to bounce back quickly from the loss.
