ERIE, Pa. – The Golden Eagle soccer team held tight throughout most of the game with Gannon, but the Golden Knights scored twice in the span of three minutes to oust Clarion 2-0 at McConnell Family Stadium.
Shots were heavily weighted toward the Golden Knights, with Gannon peppering Clarion goalkeeper
Alex Velez with 12 shots on net, compared to just four shots for the Golden Eagles. Still, the game was scoreless through 63 minutes of action as neither side was able to break through against the other.
Kylee Cross, back in the starting lineup for the first time in several weeks, posted Clarion's first shot on net, firing one at Jordan August. August made the save to her right to halt the threat.
Madison Spitko added another shot in the 31
st minute, and both
Katelyn Shaffer and Cross ripped hard shots that were just off target down the stretch.
Gannon cashed in on their plethora of scoring changes in the 64
th minute. After a corner kick, Sam Dales worked a pass to Leah Bermudez, who slipped it past Velez to make it a 1-0 lead. Just 140 seconds later Dales scored a goal of her own, taking a feed from Sarah Fails and converting. Spitko was able to generate another scoring chance for Clarion in the 71
st minute, but August made the save to keep the lead at 2-0.
Clarion will be back home on Wednesday, September 14 when they host Pitt-Johnstown at Memorial Stadium.
