Jarmon Hits 1K, but Golden Eagles Fall to Edinboro

CLARION, Pa. --- Gerald Jarmon became the 32nd player in program history to top the 1,000-point mark on Saturday, but the Golden Eagle men's basketball team was unable to polish off a victory in falling 73-69 to Edinboro at Tippin Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Jarmon's historic score came with 40 seconds remaining in the first half, and cut the Edinboro lead to just one point at that time. The sophomore guard drove to the hoop through traffic and laid it in for the score, putting him at 1,001 points at that moment. He is the first Golden Eagle to reach 1,000 career points since Cam Grumley hit the milestone during the 2017-18 season.

Also of note is the pace at which Jarmon hit 1,000 career points. Jarmon reached the mark in just his 52nd career game, giving him a career scoring average of 19.6 points per game. That scoring average ranks fourth in program history among players with 50 or more games played.

Despite that, the Golden Eagles were not able to capitalize on a strong stretch in the second half that could have potentially put them in position to win. Jarmon hit a pull-up jumper at the 8:49 mark as part of a back-and-forth exchange with the Fighting Scots' offense, giving Clarion a 53-51 lead at that point. Naim Miller scored on a jumper roughly a minute later to tie the score, and Jaden Harper gave the Fighting Scots a 56-53 lead with a three-pointer at the 6:24 mark.

As it turned out, Edinboro would not relinquish that lead the rest of the way, though the Golden Eagles did manage to pull within a point late in the game. The Fighting Scots led by as many as six points down the stretch, but Fray Nguimbi cut the lead to 68-64 with two free throws at the 1:09 mark. Jarmon scored on the team's next offensive possession, draining a long three-pointer from the corner to cut the deficit to 68-67, and Steve Kelly made a pair of free throws with eight second left to make it 70-69. Miller sealed Edinboro's win with six seconds remaining, pulling down an offensive rebound on his own missed free throw to prevent the Golden Eagles a shot at tying or taking the lead.

Jarmon finished with a game-high 30 points on 11-of-21 scoring, and also posted five rebounds and two steals. Justice Easter scored six points but grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Cam Kearney notched 15 points and seven boards.

The first half was back-and-forth as well, with Kearney giving the Golden Eagles a 12-9 lead at the 15:09 mark. Jihad Simpson and Fray Nguimbi scored on back-to-back possessions to keep the Golden Eagles' lead at three points, with the latter making it 19-16, but the tide turned toward the Fighting Scots as the half went on. Bryce Spriggs scored a transition bucket on Edinboro's final possession of the half to make it 32-29 at the break.
