Wrestling Tops Lock Haven in Home Dual

CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle wrestling team put together a string of six wins in seven bouts to secure a come-from-behind victory on Sunday afternoon, with Clarion beating longtime rival Lock Haven 22-14 in front of a rabid crowd in Tippin Gymnasium. Clarion has now won five straight duals, including two straight to kick off a three-match homestand.

The Golden Eagles held the bonus point advantage on the afternoon, racking up a tech fall and two major decisions compared to just one tech fall for Lock Haven. Three of Clarion's bonus point victories came in a four-match stretch, allowing the Golden Eagles to clinch the team match with Ty Bagoly's win in the 197-pound bout. The redshirt senior worked over Brad Morrison for a yeomanlike major decision, tilting him a handful of times for a 12-0 score.

While the turning point of the match may not have come at 165 pounds, that bout was the one that allowed the Golden Eagles full entry back into the competition. Cam Pine went up 7-0 on James Hogan through one period and held a 14-0 advantage through two, but was unable to bring Hogan all the way over for a fall. His riding time advantage granted him a tech fall, though, tying the team match at 11-11.

The emotional core of the afternoon proved to be the 174-pound bout, with John Worthing winning a 15-8 decision over Tyler Stoltzfus. The two grapplers exchanged loads of points in the first period, with Worthing back-tripping Stoltzfus early in the second period for a takedown to take a 6-5 lead. A two-point near fall and an escape by Stoltzfus kept Worthing on top 8-6, but Worthing came in late with a takedown and a four-point near fall to up the ante to 14-6. Though he didn't come away with the major, Worthing's win gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the afternoon.

As it turned out, that lead was built to last. Will Feldkamp worked Colin Fegley for a 12-2 major decision, making it an 18-11 lead in the team bout, and Bagoly clinched the win with his major at 197.

The Bald Eagles struck first with wins in each of the first two bouts and in three of the first five, building an 11-6 advantage blunted only by Golden Eagle wins at 141 and 149 pounds. Seth Koleno led Tyler Dilley 3-0 but the match was knotted up at 3-3 well into the third period. Koleno came in for a double-leg but Dilley escaped and went to a scramble, cutting the former's lead to 5-4, but an injury timeout called by Dilley with 32 seconds remaining quashed any chances of a comeback. At 149 pounds, Schickel very nearly got his second pin in as many bouts, picking up a takedown and a four-point near fall in the first period against Nick Stonecheck en route to a 9-4 decision.
