MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. --- With two wins by fall and a pair of overtime victories, the Golden Eagle wrestling team went on the road to defeat Mid-American Conference (MAC) rival Central Michigan by a 25-12 score on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Clarion not only carried the majority of the bouts for the afternoon, they displayed some flash to bring down the Chippewas on their home floor. The Golden Eagles recorded the only bonus points of the afternoon, giving them a comfortable margin late in the match that made the win fait accompli.
Â
Of course, said comfortable margin came as a result of a number of gutsy efforts, with the Golden Eagles putting in the early work to put the Chippewas on their heels. One such effort came in the very first bout of the afternoon, with
Joey Fischer winning his fourth straight MAC dual match in overtime. Fischer caught Sean Spidle on a single-leg late in the third period, but Spidle tied it at 3-3 with an escape and a stall against Fischer. Spidle was called for locking his hands around Fischer in the tiebreaker period, resulting in a point for the former, and Fischer escaped later in the period to take a 5-3 lead. Fischer held Spidle off in the final tiebreaker period for the 5-3 decision.
Â
The first bonus points of the day came two bouts later, with senior
Seth Koleno working Jimmy Nugent for a 17-6 major decision. Nugent got the first two takedowns of the bout in building a 4-1 lead, but Koleno quickly tied it up at 4-4 with a takedown late in the first period, and followed up with a four-point near fall as the period wound to a close. His lead was just 9-4 through two periods, but Koleno added another takedown and more back points en route to his big win.
Â
The emotional breakthrough of the match came at 149 pounds, when
Kyle Schickel came back from a 4-2 deficit to stun Johnny Lovett with a third-period pin. Lovett had controlled much of the tight match entering that final frame, and Schickel elected to start the third period in a neutral position to make up the needed score deficit. He made it up and then some, countering a shot by Lovett and twisting him to his back for a fall just 34 seconds into the period.
Â
That gave Clarion a 13-3 match lead, and
Cam Pine held off Tracy Hubbard in sudden victory at 165 pounds to put the Golden Eagles ahead by a 16-6 score. It looked as though the Chippewas had gathered some momentum late in the match when Alex Cramer broke a late tie in the 174-pound bout, beating
John Worthing by 11-7 decision, but
Will Feldkamp put all question of the team result to rest at 184 pounds. Leading 6-1 early in the second period, Feldkamp missed on a fireman's carry but was able to push Ben Cushman to his back anyway, bringing him to a prone position. Once there he broke Cushman down, flipping him to his back for the team's second fall of the day and an insurmountable 22-9 advantage.
Â
Ty Bagoly capped off the team win with a decision over Cameron Wood, beating him by an 8-3 score to add a sixth win to the Clarion ledger on Sunday.
