JOHNSTOWN, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle volleyball team dropped a road decision to Pitt-Johnstown on Friday night, as Clarion fell 3-0 (14-25, 24-26, 15-25) to the Mountain Cats in a PSAC West matchup.
Â
It was a challenging night offensively for the Golden Eagles, who hit just .074 as a team while the Mountain Cats posted a .263 team attack percentage.
Cassidy Snider finished with a double-double, posting team-highs of 12 kills and 14 digs.
London Fuller had 32 assists and two blocks, while
Finley Kearney added seven kills and two blocks of her own.
Â
The most competitive set of the night by far was the second, with the Golden Eagles briefly erasing a late UPJ lead to challenge at the end of the set. Clarion built a number of modest leads over the course of the game, including a 13-9 advantage at one point. That came on the heels of a 3-0 run that included a kill by Snider and a block by Lualis Alvarado by Fuller and
Charlie Allison. A Gabi DeRenzo service error put the Golden Eagles ahead 15-12 but the Mountain Cats rebounded with five straight points, going ahead 17-15. Kearney cut into that deficit with a solo block against Mallory Pinske, but UPJ eventually built themselves a 23-21 lead.
Â
Snider chipped away at that deficit with a kill on the next point, and the Golden Eagles temporarily staved off a set loss with kills on back to back points by Snider and Kearney. That tied the set at 24-all, but Brooke Pelloni broke the tie with a kill and PInske finished off the set with a kill on set point.
Â
This set came on the heels of a big Pitt-Johnstown run in the first set, with the Mountain Cats turning what was only a 13-12 lead into a 23-13 advantage with a 10-1 rally. UPJ eventually won the first set 25-14 after Alvarado hit kills on back-to-back points. In the third set, Clarion kept things relatively close early on, with
Karlee Berchtold hitting a kill to cut the UPJ lead to 10-8. The Mountain Cats eventually built themselves a 16-12 lead and stretched it into a 22-13 advantage.
Taylor Haupt added a kill late in the set, but Journey Welling eventually finished off the match with a kill that made it 25-15.
