Golden Eagles Close Season at Edinboro, Fall in OT

EDINBORO, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle men's basketball team went to overtime in a seesaw second half on Saturday afternoon, but Clarion was unable hold off Edinboro in falling 84-80 to the Fighting Scots in a marathon contest.

Clarion led at halftime but the Fighting Scots flipped the script in the second half, and at one point the latter led 60-67 with 3:49 remaining in regulation. Cam Kearney – who scored a career-high 31 points before fouling out in overtime – put the Golden Eagles ahead 71-69 when he scored through a foul by Dominique Keyes, and then polished off the and-one. That would be the last field goal of the half for either side, though, and the Fighting Scots tied the game at 71 with free throws from Naim Miller and Kierell Green.

A Clarion turnover with five seconds remaining gave the Fighting Scots the ball, but Green's desperation three-pointer rimmed out to send the game to the extra period. In overtime, the Golden Eagles went on a 4-0 run to take a 78-75 lead, with Kearney and Jayson Harris making free throws to build the lead. Edinboro responded with five straight, though Steve Kelly knotted things up with 1:22 left on a midrange jumper. Miller put the Fighting Scots back in the lead with a jumper on the next possession, and Harris missed the potential go-ahead three-pointer with four seconds left to lock up the win for Edinboro.

Kearney capped his outstanding freshman season with his best scoring performance of the year, posting 31 points on 8-of-15 shooting to go with nine rebounds. Harris, meanwhile, added 10 points and seven rebounds. Fray Nguimbi contributed a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and the freshman forward also chipped in three steals and two blocked shots.

The teams traded the lead 14 times over the course of the game, signifying a back-and-forth battle where neither side could total take command. Clarion held the advantage through 10 minutes in the first half, taking a 21-17 lead on a jumper by Kelly. The junior guard knocked down a three-pointer on the next trip down the floor, giving the Golden Eagles a 24-17 edge, and the lead persisted to the end of the first half as Kearney made it 39-36 with a free throw.

Edinboro scored the first six points of the second half to take a three-point lead, and at one point the Fighting Scots led by seven points early in the frame. Kearney gave the Golden Eagles a 54-52 lead with three free throws after a foul by Green, but the Fighting Scots re-took the lead and the teams traded blows for the remainder of the half.
