CALIFORNIA, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle tennis team picked up an early lead on the road on Monday afternoon, but Clarion could not quite finish off California (PA) in falling by a 5-2 score at Roadman Park.
Â
The start of the day was one of the best of the season for the Golden Eagles, who took two of the three matches in the doubles session to go ahead 1-0 in the team match. The No. 1 doubles pairing of
Davan Lion and
Alexis Strouse claimed a 6-3 win over Leandra Guldimann and Diletta Maria Mungo. Meanwhile, the No. 3 pairing of
Charlie Allison and
Alyson Fisher cruised in their match against Sierra Everett and Anna Oblock, winning by a 6-3 score to secure the doubles point.
Â
Allison was not finished, though, as she went on to win a straight sets decision at No. 5 singles. She won a close first set with Kylie Feltenberger, taking it by a 6-4 score, and then proceeded to not drop a game in the second set to win 6-0.
Â
Savannah Buttery nearly claimed a win of her own in the No. 6 singles match, splitting the first two sets with Olivia Hoin by 6-4 scores. The third set tiebreaker was a nailbiter, but Hoin held on for a 10-8 decision to clinch the match.
Â
In the other singles matches, the Vulcans managed to rally back to take a 5-2 match win. Mungo edged out Lion by a 6-3, 6-2 score at No. 1 singles, while Guldimann defeated Strouse 6-3, 6-0. Maria Del Mar Ojeda rounded and Carmen Duran rounded out the five singles wins for Cal.
