CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle soccer team made their home debut on Saturday afternoon, but Clarion was unable to make up a two-goal second half deficit in falling 2-1 to Roberts Wesleyan.
Â
The Redhawks struck early in the game, scoring in the fifth minute. Alena Weibel picked up the ball on a dead sprint and advanced around her defender, catching
Sage Sherk out of the net and tapping it in for the 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Golden Eagles cut the deficit in half in the 69
th minute of action, thanks in part to an impressive offensive display by
Ciara DiMauro.
Kylee Cross advanced a pass up the middle to DiMauro, who tried to take on Maia LaVigne one-on-one. DiMauro spun LaVigne around to get around her before taking a shove near the goal mouth, initiating a penalty kick.
Â
Clarion opted for Cross to take the PK against goalkeeper Nicolette Knauf, and the senior forward delivered. She teed it up and deposited the ball in the lower lefthand corner, beating Knauf to her right to make it a 2-1 game.
Â
The Redhawks had scored on their own PK earlier in the half, after Sherk tripped up on offensive player making a play on the ball. Jenna Northup scored on her attempt, upping Roberts Wesleyan's lead to 2-0 at the time.
Â
Clarion managed a couple of shots in the final minutes of action, but could not get past the Redhawk defense for any serious scoring opportunities.
Â
The Golden Eagles will return to action next week, when they open their conference schedule at home against IUP on Wednesday, September 6.
