CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles men's swimming & diving team edged out Gannon at home for a dual meet win on Friday night, with Clarion beating the Golden Knights 138-99 in Tippin Natatorium.
Â
The night featured a number of electric finishes, with the first coming in the very first event of the meet. Clarion took the top two spots in the 200 Medley Relay, with the A squad of
Henry Miller,
Dominic Cortopassi,
David Bocci and
Austin Prokopec winning handily with a time of 1:32.77. Meanwhile, the B quartet of
Mason Peck,
Richard Scholer,
Gavin Guckavan and
Dylan Chaky showed well by tying the Golden Knights' top foursome for second place, touching the wall in a time of 1:36.71. Guckavan brought the Golden Eagles back from a trailing position with a split of 22.44 seconds, nearly a full-second faster than his counterpart Connor Hebert.
Â
Later in the evening, Prokopec provided his own fireworks in the 100 Free. He edged out Gannon's Bryce Buret by 0.11 seconds, beating him to the wall with a winning time of 47.45. Miller also authored an impressive victory in the 100 Breast, beating the field from Lane 5 with a time of 58.83 that was just ahead of Gannon's Aidar Sataev.
Â
Records fell in the swimming events as well, this time courtesy of two-time NCAA qualifier
David Bocci. He broke
Connor Cary's pool record in the 100 Fly with a winning time of 49.78, nearly two full seconds faster than Gannon's Jakub Loboda.
Â
Freshman
George Horey won the first individual event of the day for Clarion, pacing the field in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:14.10. Bocci recorded what turned out to be the first of two wins at the meet in the next event, leading the way in the 200 Free with a time of 1:43.73 that was almost three full seconds faster than second place.
Carson Wolbert was on the heels of the second-place finisher, taking third with a time of 1:46.53.
Â
Guckavan took second in the 50 Free with a time of 21.84, but another Golden Eagle did not win an event until Bocci's swim in the 100 Fly. Prokopec followed with a first place finish in the 100 Free while
Mason Irwin (48.79) and Chaky (49.04) took third and fourth respectively. Cortopassi continued the momentum with a winning swim in the 100 Back, touching the wall in 52.34, and Miller's win in the 100 Breast capped the slate of wins.
Â
Meanwhile, over in the diving well, the Golden Eagles saw two athletes earn full qualification for the NCAA Championships pre-qualification meet, and a host of others posting big scores to further their own causes.
Corwin Lindeman won the 1-Meter 11-dive list with a score of 521.85 and the six-dive list with a score of 331.5, giving him full qualification for the national championships.
Jack Beattie, meanwhile, also hit full qualification, taking fourth in the 1-Meter 11-dive list with a score of 440.78 that just cleared the bar for entry. He also took fifth in the 3-Meter 11-Dive list with a score of 464.78.
Â
Three divers also earned their first scores toward NCAA qualification. Zak Kennedy put up a score of 485.1 in the 1-Meter 11-Dive list, which was also good for second place in the field.
Ethan Coronado just got over the mark in the same event, placing third with a 464.25. Coronado topped the standard again in the 3-Meter 11-dive list, placing first in the field with a score of 519.6. Joining him was 2024 All-American
