CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles women's swimming & diving team rolled to a win in their first dual meet of the season, beating Gannon 160.5 – 76.5 in Tippin Natatorium on Friday afternoon. Clarion put up win after win over the Golden Knights in the pool, and the Golden Eagles' corps of divers showed out on the other end of the building with qualifying scores and pool records.
A Clarion athlete touched the wall first in 11 of the 13 swimming events on Friday, and oftentimes the Golden Eagles racked up points in bunches in the individual events. The tone was set during the very first event of the night, with the 200 Medley Relay team of
Zoey Beck,
Madelynn McTeer,
Hannah Greenway and
Haley Miller winning by more than two full seconds with a time of 1:49.74. That was followed by the 1000 Free, with three of the top four finishers wearing Blue & Gold;
Joslyn Jurski led the way with a time of 10:46.36, followed by Lillian Linscheid (11:27.43) and
Allison McMurray (11:28.89) in third and fourth respectively.
Greenway tacked on an individual win a few events later as the Golden Eagles again took three of the top four spots in the 50 Free. Greenway finished first in a time of 23.96, beating the rest of the field by more than a second, while
Jordan Kutchak (25.26) and
Zara Paisley (25.85) took third and fourth. The highlight of the individual events may have been the finish in the 200 IM, with three Golden Eagles filling out the top of the sheet.
Maria Wold won in a time of 2:15.50, followed immediately by
Eva Molenaar (2:16.34) and
Sarah Grimenstein (2:17.07), with the latter tying Gannon's Hannah Jacobs in the finish.
Rachel Hess kept the momentum going with a win in the 100 Fly, finishing in 59.46, and the duo of
Amanda Fetsko and McTeer went 1-2 in the 100 Free with times of 53.83 and 55.02 respectively.
Sydney Updegrave and
Zoey Beck then went 1-2 in the 100 Back, finishing within 0.17 seconds of one another to lead the field, and Jurski won her second event of the night with a 5:15.98 in the 500 Free.
Clarion finished things off in the pool by taking the top two spots in the 200 Free Relay. Jurski, McTeer, Kutchak and Greenway were the first to touch the wall, coming in at 1:38.16, while Hess, Paisley,
Erika Zimmerman and Fetsko finished with a time of 1:40.39.
Meanwhile, over in the diving well, the Golden Eagles saw records fall and two athletes earn full NCAA qualification, giving them four women set for the NCAA prequalification meet in March.
Luna Castellanos set a new 11-dive record in the 3-Meter with a winning score of 525.45, topping what
would have been a pool record from
Alexa Gonczi. The latter scored a 517.65 in the 3-Meter 11-dive list, easily clearing the bar for NCAA qualification and giving her the second such score of the season.
Katie Madigan also attained her second qualifying score of the year, putting up a mark of 472.05 in the 3-meter 11-dive.
Castellanos was not done setting records, however. In the course of her work on the 3-Meter board she also set a pool record in the six-dive list, posting a score of 320.4, and she also set a new pool record in the 1-Meter six-dive list with a score of 306.9.
Taelyn Thomas just barely missed hitting an NCAA qualifying score in the second event of the night, the 1-Meter 11-five list. Thomas scored 387.0, coming up just three points shy of the mark. Gonczi won the 1-Meter with a score of 428.93 while Madigan took second with a 428.48.
