CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles and Seton Hill engaged in a defensive matchup on Wednesday night, with the two PSAC West rivals playing to a 0-0 tie.
Sage Sherk was outstanding in goal for the Golden Eagles, earning her first shutout of the season and recording 11 saves on the night.
Â
The Golden Eagles were the more aggressive team at the start of the game, taking eight shots in the first half, double the number of shots by Seton Hill.
Marisa Colondrillo led the Golden Eagles' offensive attack with six shots, four of which were on goal. She tried to give Clarion the lead late in the first half with 8:32 left, capitalizing on a Griffins turnover. She launched a shot from outside the box, but it went right into the arms of Seton Hill goalkeeper Sydney Caldwell.
Â
The best scoring opportunity in the first half came with just 4:45 remaining when
Lexi Coull sent a lofting crossing pass to Colondrillo, who touched the ball once and fired a shot just over the crossbar.
Â
The second-half action started fast and furiously, with three shots taken in the first three minutes of action. Just 45 seconds into the half, Corynna Rotoli made a nice move to sidestep a Clarion defender. Still,
Hailey Dobb quickly rotated, and with a sliding effort, she affected the shot, allowing for an easy save by Sherk. Clarion fired a pair of shots minutes later, but both sailed high over the net.
Â
At the 39:06 mark in the second half, a similar play by
Reese Aquilio helped keep the score tied, as she slid to knock away a shot from an open goal attempt by the Griffins. This was the type of consistent effort that led to the Golden Eagles earning their second consecutive home shutout.
Â
At the 16:10 mark in the second half, the Griffins mounted an offensive attack, and Samantha Hallo rifled in a shot, but Sherk was able to stop it, closing the door on any Seton Hill goals.
Â
The backline of Dobb, Aquilio,
Savannah Houk, and
Tessa Heffron played all 90 minutes, forming a strong wall and forcing Seton Hill to take extremely difficult shots. The Golden Eagles also played a clean game, accumulating just one foul throughout the match.
