Softball Defeated in Road DH at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle softball team went on the road to take on the top contender in the PSAC West division on Sunday afternoon, falling in both games of a doubleheader to Seton Hill. The Griffins won the first game 10-2 and the second 8-0, both in five innings.

Game 1: Seton Hill 10, Clarion 2 (5 inn.)

RECAP: Taking on the most potent offense for the second time in a week, the Golden Eagles fell behind early to the Griffins. Seton Hill's Morgan Toal hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to put her team ahead, and the Griffins tacked on seven runs in the second inning to open up a 10-0 advantage.

On the other side of the field, Lauren Dellett kept the Golden Eagle batters off balance, allowing just one baserunner – a two-out hit by pitch for Desi Allen – until the top of the fourth inning. Clarion finally broke through in the hit column as well as the scoreboard in the fourth inning, after Kathryn O'Horo led off the frame with a walk. With two outs in the frame, Rachel Helsley bashed a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for her second home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 10-2.

Relief pitcher Kailey Vaillancourt polished off an effective outing in the bottom of the fourth inning, holding the Griffins scoreless to give her team another chance to extend the game. Dellett retired the Golden Eagles in order in the top of the fifth to close out the game.

Vaillancourt threw 2.2 innings of shutout relief, entering in the second inning and allowing four hits but no runs.

Game 2: Seton Hill 8, Clarion 0 (5 inn.)

RECAP:
The Griffins got off to another hot start in the second game, including back-to-back solo home runs from Camryn Murphy and Grace Paredes to give themselves a 2-0 lead. Clarion put a runner in scoring position in the top of the second when Helsley and Lauren Hartman hit a pair of singles, but Logan Hartman retired Alexis Valencia to end the threat.

Nina Grandey drove in a run in the bottom of the second to put the Griffins up 3-0, and Seton Hill tacked on four runs in the third to make it a 7-0 game. Toal hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase the lead to eight runs, but the Golden Eagles came close to extending the game in the top of the fifth. Amber Gilliam drew a leadoff walk, and Valencia beat out a bunt to the pitcher for an infield single to put runners on first and second with one out.

Emily Buchleitner hit a hard grounder to first base to move the runners up a base, but Hartman struck out O'Horo in the final at-bat of the game to close things out.

Taylor Eckles threw two innings of relief, allowing two runs – one earned – in the third and fourth innings.
