EDINBORO, Pa. --- In a fast-paced shootout that saw both teams approach the century mark, the Golden Eagles men's basketball team came up just a hair short on Friday night as Edinboro held on for a 94-93 win at McComb Fieldhouse.
Â
The game featured hot shooting from beginning to end, with both sides lighting up the scoreboard over 40 minutes. Clarion shot 57.1 percent from the field and 60.0 percent from three-point range, going 15-of-25 from beyond the arc. The Fighting Scots, meanwhile, also shot 57.1 percent from the field and 11-of-19 (.579) from three-point range.
Â
The biggest difference came at the free throw line, where Edinboro went 19-of-24 while Clarion shot 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. The Fighting Scots took advantage of Golden Eagles miscues better, outscoring them 21-8 off turnovers.
Â
Similar to the first game between the teams this season, the final few minutes were a battle to the buzzer.
Cam Kearney drained a three-pointer with 5:23 to play to give his team the lead but Edinboro followed with a 5-0 run over the next minute, that was ultimately halted by a deep shot from
Justice Easter.
Trey Nelson put the Golden Eagles up with a pair of free throws with 3:31 to play but
Steve Kelly responded with a trey, and Edinboro grew their lead to 90-85 after a 6-0 run.
Â
The Golden Eagles were not done, however.
Trey Nelson drove on the fast break and scored a quick bucket to make it 90-87, and after a pair of free throws from Kelly, Kearney hit a difficult three-pointer with four seconds left to make it 92-90. Cenker Evran sank two free throws on the opposite end of the floor to ice it, though Kearney tacked on a 25-foot three-pointer for good measure at the buzzer.
Â
Kearney tied the game-high with 26 points, going 10-of-13 from the field and 4-of-4 from three-point range. He also logged six rebounds, three assists and two steals. He was joined by a coterie of Golden Eagles in double-figures, headlined by 16 points apiece from Nelson and
Gavin Cote. Cote went 4-of-7 from three-point range.
Kendon Peebles came off the bench for 10 points.
Â
Clarion shot off to a good start, taking a 19-9 lead just six minutes and change into the game.
Josiah Dow made it 27-18 with a three-pointer near the halfway mark of the first half and Peebles made bucket in the paint to make it 34-25. Edinboro responded with a 9-0 run that tied the score, and eventually took a 40-36 advantage on a fast break bucket from Ryan Ladjevich.
Traden Gray knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point, and the big man later sank a trey to tie the score at 46 entering halftime.
